The 2025 World Press Freedom Index, released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), shows Taiwan rising to 24th place, China ranking third from the bottom, and Hong Kong falling into the worst category, "situation very bad," for the first time. The U.S. ranking fell to 57th due to Trump's cuts in funding to U.S. media outlets such as VOA and RFA. RSF warns that China may take the opportunity to spread its control of speech around the world as the U.S. loses its status as a "beacon of press freedom."
