Otto Kretschmer, known as "Silent Otto," was a highly successful German U-boat commander during World War II. He sank 47 ships, totaling over 274,000 tons of Allied shipping, using the tactic of "one torpedo, one ship." Kretschmer was captured in 1941 and spent the rest of the war as a British prisoner. After the war, he joined the West German Navy and rose to the rank of Rear Admiral.
