A new study has identified multiple brain regions, including the prefrontal, temporal, and cingulate cortices, as well as the hippocampus, as being linked to word memory. The research, which used high-resolution MRI scans to compare brain structures in epilepsy patients and healthy individuals, found that shrinkage in these regions is associated with difficulty recalling words and may have implications for neurosurgical approaches.
