In 2018, Hong Kong University Shenzhen Hospital performed a total pancreatectomy on 77-year-old Zhang Yuhua without clear histological evidence of malignancy. The patient died several months later due to severe liver failure. Her daughter filed a medical malpractice lawsuit, and in November 2023, the court ruled that the hospital was fully liable for compensation. The family claims the hospital removed five healthy organs, which the hospital denies. The family also seeks criminal charges against the attending physician, but their complaints to the Shenzhen Health Commission and police have not been addressed.
